SHARING IN
A MEMORY
The donor
of this memorial card has made a contribution to the N.Y.
Firefighters Burn Center Foundation. The person remembered shall,
in the form of a living memorial, share in all of its humanitarian
works and accomplishments.
Included
in the pages of the Memorial Card is this passage written by
Co-Founder
of The Burn Center Foundation Joe Hickey.
“THE
BURN STORY”
One
of the most painful of human experiences is a burn. Since man
discovered fire he has been exposed to the hazard of burn injury.
Although it is one of the oldest forms of injury the progress of
its treatment has not advanced at the pace of other medical
specialties.
Severe
burn victims have the most complex medical and psychological
problems known to medicine. The general hospital is not equipped
or staffed to cope with its many complexities.
A
highly specialized medical facility commonly referred to as a
‘burn center’ is geared to the comprehensive management of
acute burn cases. A ‘burn center’ guarantees a burn victim
immediate admission, prompt evaluation of his burn, expert
treatment and the proper rehabilitative therapy.
Today,
deaths and crippling due to burns are greater than those due to
polio during the peak epidemic year of 1954, and the New York Area
is above the National average.
A
'burn center' with its highly specialized care, extensive research
and burn education, is the best way to confront the devastating
assaults of burns.
